WP1: Secret key generation

Here, we develop several approaches for key generation using underwater acoustic communications. We exploit acoustic channel randomness to have communicating parties agree on secret bits, and to analyse the performance against an eavesdropper.

The milestone for this WP is a sea demonstration of the developed techniques.

WP2: Authentication

Here, we develop protocols for message authentication. We leverage the characteristics of the channel impulse response to obtain location-dependent decision metrics that make it possible to authenticate received packets. Moreover, we design and evaluate countermeasures to authentication attacks.

The milestone for this WP is the statistical analysis of a large set of realistic simulations, supported by a set of pre-recorded network traces and new experiments.

WP3: Interception

In this WP, we develop algorithms for the detection of covert underwater communications. We test our countermeasures by implementing attacking techniques that try to unveil covert signals, resulting into benchmark procedures to test the security of covert communications.

The milestone for WP is a demonstration at sea of detection and attacking capabilities.

WP4: Prototyping

A very important part of our project consists of designing, implementing, and testing a prototype system. This is the main task of this WP. Here, we will integrate hardware and software components with existing acoustic modems to implement the developed security algorithms.
